What did Marco Rubio announce about passports?

During President Trump’s America.gov event, Rubio presented two key announcements. The first was a completely digital passport application process.

The second was a redesigned passport expected to launch in 2028. Both changes were announced on September 29, according to the State Department.

These announcements are part of the new artificial intelligence-driven government platform. America.gov launched that same Tuesday as a «single digital entry point».

How will the new online application process work?

According to Rubio, those applying for their first passport will be able to do so entirely online. The system will be available starting next year through America.gov.

Applicants will log in through login.gov and use information the government already possesses. They will also upload a photo from their own device and pay online.

«No printed forms, no photos taken at pharmacies, no appointments, no lines, no intermediaries,» Rubio stated at the America.gov event. He added that the platform will offer real-time tracking.

According to Rubio, the goal is for most Americans to use this digital path. That target is scheduled for the end of 2027.

How will the new 2028 passport design look?

Rubio described the redesign as a celebration of American history and identity. The design centers on the American eagle as the main symbol.

The new cover will feature a larger and golden Great Seal. It will also more prominently display the words «United States of America,» according to Rubio.

Inside, the pages will showcase key moments from the country’s history. This includes the American Revolution and westward expansion.

Images of the flag raising at Iwo Jima will also appear. Additionally, it will include references to NASA’s Artemis missions.

The document will also feature an animation that simulates an eagle in flight. This effect activates when turning the pages of the passport.

This design, called «Flight of the Eagle,» joins previous commemorative editions. An example is the «Patriot Passport,» launched in 2026.

What practical benefits will this have for travelers?

For most travelers, the greatest benefit will come from the digital process. This could reduce in-person appointments, printed paperwork, and external assistance services.

Rubio argued that the current system allows external companies to charge unnecessary fees. According to him, those fees take advantage of a process that should be simpler.

Additionally, travelers will have better tracking of their applications. This includes estimated delivery dates and real-time updates.

Rubio noted that, until now, it was easier to track a food order than a passport. He said this during the America.gov event.

Will current passports remain valid?

Yes. Current passports will remain valid until their expiration date. This applies as long as they meet other requirements, such as not being damaged.

The State Department clarified that previous designs can continue to be used for travel. The redesign will not change requirements for international travel.

Instead, the renovation seeks to update the document.
