ALERT: FDA Issues Maximum Alert for Blueberries Contaminated with E. coli

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) elevated to the most serious level the recall of GreenWise frozen berries. The products were sold in Publix supermarkets and could be contaminated with the bacterium E. coli O145:H28.

The alert affects Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. The recall is linked to an outbreak that sickened 12 people in 2 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

What products should be removed from freezers?

Publix recalled all units of GreenWise organic frozen blueberries and whole organic mixed berries. The FDA recommends not consuming any product included in the alert, even if the packaging appears intact. The items may still be in freezers because they have extended expiration dates until 2028.

The alert covers all lots with a preferred consumption date prior to February 9, 2028. The batch code 60401 appeared in one of the first recalls of 10-ounce blueberries. However, the subsequent recall expanded the measure to all units of blueberries and mixed berries included. The FDA noted that Publix stopped selling the affected products in its stores.

Why did the FDA classify the recall as level 1?

Level 1 classification indicates that there is a reasonable probability of serious consequences or death. It is the category of highest risk within the FDA recall system. The measure was taken after linking the products to infections caused by E. coli O145:H28. This strain produces toxins that can cause severe diarrhea, abdominal cramps and vomiting.

In some patients, the infection can trigger hemolytic uremic syndrome. The CDC reported that 12 people became ill after consuming products linked to the outbreak. Additionally, 4 patients were hospitalized, according to an update released by USA Today. As of the latest available update, authorities reported no deaths associated with this outbreak.

What should people who bought the berries do?

The consumer should check the brand, product type and date printed on the package. If the product matches the alert, it should be discarded or returned to any Publix store. The FDA and CDC recommend not tasting the berries to check if they are contaminated.

E. coli can be present even if the food does not have an unusual smell, color or texture. People should wash their hands after handling the package. They should also clean containers, blenders, cutting boards and surfaces that touched the berries. The CDC recommends using hot water and soap or a dishwasher to clean contaminated utensils.

What are the symptoms that require medical attention?

Symptoms of E. coli can begin several days after consumption. The most common include diarrhea, abdominal cramps and vomiting. The appearance of bloody diarrhea requires quickly contacting a healthcare professional. It is also urgent to receive care when there is high fever, dehydration or decreased urination.

Small children, elderly adults and people with weakened immune systems face greater risk of complications. Patients should not self-medicate with antibiotics or anti-diarrheal medications. A doctor should determine the appropriate treatment based on symptoms and each person’s medical history.
