401(k) savings reached record levels during the second quarter of 2026, according to the most recent quarterly retirement analysis from Fidelity Investments. The average balance of these retirement accounts reached $155,800, an increase of 13.1% compared to the prior year and the largest quarterly jump since 2020.
How Did 401(k) Savings Evolve in 2026?
The Fidelity study, which covered 25,800,000 participants in 27,300 corporate plans as of June 30, 2026, showed that the average balance grew 10.5% compared to the previous quarter. The figure increased from $141,000 at the end of March to $155,800 at the close of June.
The combined savings rate remained at 14.4% for the second consecutive quarter, a historic record according to the financial firm. This figure corresponds to an average contribution of 9.6% by employees and an additional 4.8% by employers.
«Despite market fluctuations at the beginning of the year, retirement savers remained focused on their long-term goals,» Fidelity stated in its report. The company also reported that 769,000 accounts already exceed one million dollars, an increase of 30% compared to the prior year.
What Are the New Contribution Limits for 2026?
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) set the employee elective deferral limit at $24,500 for 2026, an increase from the $23,500 of 2025. This amount applies to 401(k) plans, 403(b) plans, and most governmental 457 plans.

Individuals age 50 and older can make an additional catch-up contribution of $8,000, which raises their total limit to $32,500 annually. This benefit is designed to help those approaching retirement compensate for years with lower contributions.
Under the provision known as SECURE 2.0, workers between ages 60 and 63 have a higher catch-up limit of $11,250. This means that this group can contribute up to $35,750 annually to their retirement account, as confirmed by the IRS.
What Steps Do Experts Recommend to Increase Savings?
Nick Avila, founder of United Debt Relief, explained that hiring a financial planner helps compare individual progress against expected benchmarks for each age and income level. However, there are concrete strategies that any worker can apply without specialized advice.
