What is the new Jobs NYC Center?

Starting Monday, October 5, job seekers aspiring to municipal positions will have a new place for assistance. The center is located at 2 Lafayette Street, in Manhattan.

There, candidates will receive support to find openings and prepare their applications. They will also be able to understand hiring requirements, including civil service exams.

Additionally, the office will organize job fairs and hiring events. Some of them will feature interviews and on-site hiring opportunities.

However, the center does not guarantee landing a job. Its function is to help candidates advance in the application process.

What did the mayor say about this new initiative?

«Every New Yorker deserves a real opportunity to get a good job,» said Mayor Zohran Mamdani. He said this during the official launch of the center.

The project was developed by two municipal departments. These are the Department of Small Business Services (SBS) and the Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS).

The office will occupy a municipal space that had been vacant for some time in Lower Manhattan. That location is situated just a few blocks from city government headquarters.

What other services will the center offer?

In addition to individual assistance, the center will offer workshops on careers in the public sector. It will also provide information about exam schedules and the civil service process.

It will also support municipal employees seeking advancement within local government. Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su explained the importance of this guidance.

According to Su, many workers avoid public sector jobs because they find the process complicated. «New Yorkers can come in, receive support, and leave with a path to stable employment,» Su stated.

What results did the center’s preliminary opening produce?

In August, during its preliminary opening, the center held one of its first hiring events. That event allowed the recruitment of 17 members of the NYC Business Express Service Team.

This team guides entrepreneurs on municipal permits, licenses, and inspections. Additionally, the «Jobs NYC» program has existed since 2024 and has already helped several institutions.

According to SBS data, the program helped 47 public agencies recruit staff. Among them are the Department of Education, NYC Health + Hospitals, and CUNY.

Why is the hiring process so slow?

The center’s opening comes amid a municipal paradox. Many are seeking employment, yet agencies maintain more than 12,760 authorized positions unfilled.

This data comes from a City Comptroller report. However, it does not mean all those positions are posted or immediately available.

According to municipal policies, hiring may require a civil service exam. Additionally, it typically requires a prolonged wait, even after initial contact with the candidate.

Shirley Aldebol, chair of the City Council’s Civil Service Committee, detailed this problem. She did so during a oversight hearing held this year.

According to Aldebol, it can take up to six months between calling an eligible candidate and their first day of work. For this reason, the new center aims to accelerate and simplify that process.
