Lo que debes saber

The Venezuelan community based in the New York tri-state area called for a rally in front of the United Nations headquarters to reject the official presence of Delcy Rodríguez. The peaceful demonstration will take place on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, coinciding with the opening of the high-level debate and a planned meeting between the official and Donald Trump.

Why are they calling for protests at the UN?

The citizen call came after confirming Delcy Rodríguez’s attendance at the 81st General Assembly of the United Nations Organization (UN). Various exile organizations expressed their rejection of recognizing diplomatic legitimacy to someone who was part of the government leadership during Nicolás Maduro’s administration.

The organizers argue that, eight months after Maduro’s capture and transfer to a federal detention center in Brooklyn, Venezuela still lacks a timeline toward democratic elections. Instead, activists denounce a pragmatic approach by the White House that excludes historical demands from civil society and political prisoners.

Similarly, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz confirmed that Trump and Rodríguez will hold informal talks during a multilateral reception in Manhattan. The meeting will represent the first face-to-face contact between both since the reconfiguration of power in Caracas.

What are the central demands of the Venezuelan diaspora?

The organizers of the mobilization established as their main slogan: «Let Venezuela’s future not be decided without Venezuelans.» The groups demand that geopolitical agreements do not sacrifice justice for victims of internationally documented human rights violations.

The organizations demand an end to internal political persecution and the unconditional release of those detained for reasons of conscience in the South American country. Similarly, they are calling for the international community to pressure for transparent and verifiable elections.

The petition also addresses the situation of Venezuelan migrants in the United States. Thousands of people face legal uncertainty following the end of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designations and prolonged delays in asylum applications with the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR).

What security recommendations do they provide to attendees?
