This intestinal infection, caused by a parasite, has sickened thousands of people across nearly the entire country. The State Department of Health reported that both patients suffered from very serious underlying diseases before the infection.

They explained that the infection and severe dehydration significantly worsened their delicate pre-existing health conditions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported confirmed cases in 45 states. Michigan is the most affected territory with at least 11,234 cases and nearly 200 hospitalizations to date. Initial investigations linked the parasite’s origin to lettuce served in Taco Bell chain restaurants. These foods come from the distributor Taylor Farms, which directly imports fresh vegetables from Mexican farmland.

Due to this serious health situation, the company issued a voluntary recall of all its iceberg lettuce. The fast-food chain suffered a sharp 2% drop in sales during the third quarter. For its part, the Mexican agribusiness sector demanded maximum caution regarding all ongoing health investigations.
