Medicare Advantage at Costco: What Benefits It Includes Today

The Costco warehouse chain announced its entry into the health insurance market for seniors in the United States. The company partnered with the nonprofit insurance company SCAN Group to market medical coverage policies under its own brand name.

The pilot program will offer Medicare Advantage plans in two states and supplemental Medicare insurance in a third entity. This initiative seeks to connect optical services, pharmacies, and over-the-counter products with medical packages designed for retired beneficiaries.

How Will the Alliance Between Costco and SCAN Group Work?

The collaboration between Costco and SCAN Group represents the first direct agreement by the retail chain to structure comprehensive policies aimed at seniors. The joint project will cover initial markets that concentrate more than 5,000,000 registered beneficiaries in the federal health system.

According to projections from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), 34,000,000 people will be enrolled in Medicare Advantage in 2026. That figure represents approximately 48% of all eligible beneficiaries across the entire United States. SCAN Group insurance currently manages coverage for 460,000 members in key states such as California, Texas, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, and Washington.

The companies have not revealed the names of the selected states or monthly rates while federal regulatory procedures are being completed. The results of this pilot program will serve as the basis for evaluating future expansions to other regions of the country in the coming years.

What Health Benefits and Services Will the Policies Include?

The main strategy consists of integrating the medical policy with the facilities and pharmaceutical services already existing in chain stores. Members will be able to access preferential discounts on prescription medications, eye exams, eyeglasses, and hearing aids.

Additionally, the packages include prepaid cards with a monthly allowance for purchasing supplements and personal care items. Currently, warehouse pharmacies already accept health benefit cards from various private insurance plans on the market.

Does the Medical Policy Include the Annual Warehouse Membership?

Purchasing a policy under the warehouse brand will not automatically grant a free annual membership to users. CMS federal regulations prohibit conditioning or gifting private commercial memberships as a direct incentive to enroll in health insurance.

For this reason, anyone eligible for Medicare can purchase the plan, regardless of whether or not they have a prior member card. Enrollments will be available both at physical locations within store branches and through independent insurance advisors and digital platforms.
