The 2026 World Cup continues to deliver unforgettable moments and refereeing decisions that ignite international debate. Argentina’s recent 3-2 victory over Egypt in the round of 16 was marked by strong controversy related to VAR usage and decisions by the main referee.

The team led by Lionel Scaloni achieved an epic comeback after trailing 2-0. However, fans and sports media severely questioned two key plays that tipped the balance in favor of the Albiceleste. Outrage in Egypt was not long in coming.

The refereeing of François Letexier was at the center of all global criticism. For many soccer followers, these controversial decisions revive old suspicions about alleged preferential treatment toward major sports figures, such as star Lionel Messi.

What Happened With the Dubious Penalty in Argentina’s Favor?

The first play that sparked strong protests occurred just 18 minutes into the first half. Egypt was winning 1-0 thanks to an early header goal by Yasser Ibrahim. At that tense moment, Argentine defender Nicolás Tagliafico fell inside the opposing penalty area after slight contact with Egyptian player Haissem Hassan.

The French referee immediately pointed to the penalty spot without hesitation. Television replays showed that the alleged foul was very unclear and quite debatable. Despite intense protests from the African players, VAR did not intervene to correct or review the hasty initial refereeing decision.

Fortunately for the Egyptian team, justice seemed to arrive on its own. Lionel Messi executed the dubious penalty, but goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir perfectly read the trajectory and saved the weak shot. It was the second penalty the Argentine captain missed in this World Cup.

Why Did They Disallow a Key Goal for Egypt?

The second major controversy occurred in the second half, just when Egypt was dominating the match. The African team orchestrated a spectacular counterattack led by Hassan, who beat three Argentine defenders. The play culminated in a precise pass to Mostafa Zico, who finished expertly against goalkeeper Emiliano «Dibu» Martínez.

It was the long-awaited 2-0 that seemed to seal the match. However, the joy was short-lived.
