What is being built?

It is a new helipad for Marine One landings on the South Lawn. The goal is to provide a permanent solution to a technical problem that dates back years.

The new VH-92A Patriot helicopters discharge heat downward when taking off and landing. This can burn the grass and damage the image of the location, according to The Washington Post.

The measure appears to be practical and not merely aesthetic. Experts cited by the outlet noted that this time the motivation stems from security and operations, not just presidential preferences.

The Government Accountability Office reported in a prior report that the presidential fleet costs $4.95 billion. That figure helps explain why every technical adjustment to Marine One matters so much.

Why now?

The immediate reason is a problem with the new presidential fleet. The VH-92A should operate routinely from the White House, but the risk to the lawn complicated that use.

Trump has flown in that model on recent trips, including one to New York to watch the NBA Finals. However, for landing on the South Lawn he has sometimes relied on older models.

The idea of a helipad is not new. Previous administrations evaluated it, but rejected it for fear of altering a historic image of the presidency.
