Donald Trump sparked controversy again after confusing Iran with the “Islamic Republic of Japan” during a meeting in Ankara. The slip occurred during an appearance with Volodymyr Zelensky, on the sidelines of the NATO summit, and was reported by Japanese media outlets such as Kyodo.

The president spoke of 111 missiles launched by that supposed country while describing an attack against a U.S. vessel. He did not correct the error at the moment and continued with other verbal stumbles, such as calling Zelensky “President Putin” and pronouncing TikTok as “TicTac.”

What Exactly Did Trump Say?

Trump stated: “We had 111 missiles fired by the Islamic Republic of Japan,” according to the transcript released by Kyodo. The statement was surprising because Japan is a historic U.S. ally and is not the country the president was referring to.

The president appeared to actually be referring to Iran, but did not publicly correct himself at that moment. In his remarks, he also mentioned an attack on the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier, linked to an old controversy over hostilities in the Middle East.

The verbal slip was not isolated. During the same appearance, Trump made more mistakes and extended the press conference with a tone that the press described as erratic. This accumulation of errors caused the episode to go viral quickly.

Why Does This Error Matter?

The confusion is not just a linguistic anecdote. Iran and Japan represent completely different diplomatic realities, and that difference matters even more when discussing missiles and international security. Such a slip can fuel doubts about presidential accuracy on military matters.

The incident occurred during a meeting with Zelensky in Ankara, where the war in Ukraine and NATO’s stance were central to the debate. At a forum of that level, every word from the U.S. president has immediate impact.

There is also a domestic political dimension. Trump turned 80 years old in June, and his verbal stumbles are once again putting scrutiny on his physical and cognitive state on the table. The White House, however, attempted to downplay the issue as a result of an overly packed agenda.

How Did the White House Respond?

Spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt attributed the errors to a “marathon” agenda. According to that explanation, Trump held several press conferences and had an intense day at the NATO summit.
