Lo que debes saber

Donald Trump visits the city of Las Vegas this Wednesday. The former president seeks to highlight a key economic achievement of his administration. This measure directly benefits thousands of basic service workers.

The initiative is popularly known as «zero taxes on tips.» The Republican tax package approved this long-awaited law during 2025. Currently, the rules allow deductions for income received from that date forward.

The choice of Nevada has a clear strategic purpose. Much of the local employment depends on the tourism and hotel sector. Additionally, Trump will campaign alongside Republican candidate Marty O’Donnell.

What does the zero tax on tips policy really mean?

The policy phrase can be somewhat misleading for Hispanic workers. The new federal law does not automatically eliminate all tax obligations. In reality, it establishes a maximum deduction of $25,000 annually.

This deduction allows workers to subtract that amount from total taxable income. Reducing income subject to taxes can decrease the final tax liability. According to a report from the federal Internal Revenue Service, this could increase the expected refund.

However, workers must continue reporting all their earnings. Tips remain subject to mandatory traditional payroll taxes. Therefore, Social Security contributions must be paid promptly.

Who can claim this benefit?

The tax benefit does not apply to absolutely all formal workers. The Treasury Department approved a list with 70 specific occupations. These categories include employees of restaurants, hotels, and various casinos.

The deduction benefits waiters, bartenders, bellhops, and transportation drivers. It also explicitly includes casino dealers. Additionally, voluntary payments with casino chips count as valid tips.

The tax benefit begins to phase out under certain specific economic conditions. This occurs if individual gross income exceeds $150,000. For married couples, the strict limit is $300,000 annually.

How does this regulation affect Latino immigrant workers?

The implementation of this law excludes an important population group. Final regulations require presenting a valid Social Security number. This strict requirement deeply affects many current undocumented immigrant workers.

Those who file taxes using an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number are left out. Special coverage remains limited for this population.
