Leaving the United States? 1 in 3 Latinos Has Considered It

32% of Latino adults surveyed by Pew Research Center said they have considered moving out of the United States. The figure does not mean that all of these people have a concrete plan. It represents frustration, uncertainty, and a negative perception about the future.

The study found that 68% believe the situation of Latinos worsened during the last year. The survey was conducted between October 6 and 16, 2025. A total of 4,923 Latino adults participated in a bilingual, national sample.

Why are some Latinos considering moving?

Politics appears as the main reason for considering leaving. 46% mentioned the political situation in the United States. 26% cited the cost of living. Food, housing, gas, and service prices especially strain households with limited incomes. Other participants spoke of economic insecurity. 63% rated their financial situation as fair or poor.

The immigration situation also has an influence. Families with undocumented members face fear of raids, detentions, and policy changes. Among those who considered leaving, 45% said they would likely choose another country. 33% mentioned their family’s country of Hispanic origin.

22% still did not know where they would move. These figures show that the desire to leave does not always imply a definite decision. Intent also varies by political affiliation. 41% of Democrats said they have considered it, compared to 21% of Republicans.

What changed in the community’s perception?

68% of survey respondents stated that the situation of Latinos worsened in 2025. In 2021, only 26% held the same opinion. Pew noted this is the first time in nearly 20 years that a majority expresses such deterioration. The perception exceeds levels recorded during the 2008 economic crisis.

78% believed that Trump administration policies harm Latinos. 65% disapproved of the Administration’s immigration approach. 71% said the Government is doing too much to deport undocumented people. Concern does not affect only people without status. Several citizens and residents also changed routines out of fear.

Some families carry documents more frequently. Others cancel trips, avoid public places, or change their work schedules. Fear can alter health and education decisions. Some people avoid clinics, schools, or public services out of fear of exposure.
