What Happened During the ICE Operation in Chicago?
Agents from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, known as ICE, were conducting law enforcement operations on August 24, 2026. According to DHS, agents approached Robinson Méndez Gutiérrez as part of that operation.
The DHS stated that an ICE officer activated emergency lights to conduct a traffic stop. However, Méndez Gutiérrez allegedly ignored the instruction and fled in his blue pickup truck.

The DHS indicated that Méndez Gutiérrez «struck» an officer’s vehicle during the flight. «The officer was able to stop Méndez-Gutiérrez’s truck and arrest him without further incident,» the statement noted, according to Univision Chicago.
Who is Robinson Méndez Gutiérrez?
The DHS identified the detainee as Robinson Méndez Gutiérrez, a Venezuelan citizen. The agency stated that he illegally entered the United States in 2023 and was released during President Joe Biden’s administration.
According to DHS, Méndez Gutiérrez has a record for controlled substance possession, driving without a license, expired license, operating a vehicle without insurance, and illegal possession or transportation of liquor by the driver. These charges were independently verified.
The migrant will remain in ICE custody while his deportation proceedings advance. His case will be reviewed by an immigration court, where he will be able to present his legal defense.
