Mourning in Football: Lucas Trejo Loses His Family in Venezuela Earthquake

Argentine footballer Lucas Trejo lost his entire family in the devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela on Wednesday, June 24. Rescue teams found the lifeless bodies of his wife and 2 children after more than 74 hours of anguished search through the rubble.

The tragedy occurred in the coastal town of La Guaira, one of the areas hardest hit by the dual earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5. The player was not with them at the time of the disaster due to sporting commitments. The tragic outcome deeply shook the South American football community and the communities that had been closely following the case.

How Did the Events Unfold?

Lucas Trejo, current defender for Club Sport Marítimo de La Guaira and former player for Mexican Zacatepec, was in Caracas. He was concentrated with his team to play a match in the Copa Venezuela. According to reports from Univision, the match was suspended immediately after the violent earthquakes struck the central region of the country.
