UN Alerts Over Humanitarian Crisis Following Earthquake in Venezuela

UN agencies warned of rapid humanitarian deterioration in Venezuela. This occurs following a double earthquake that shook the country. The situation worsened after the collapse of a shelter in La Guaira.

The shelter temporarily housed 140 people who had returned to the territory. The UN Refugee Agency reported the tragedy at the center. Authorities are continuing search and rescue operations at the site.

Official figures report 1,719 deaths and 5,034 injured. However, the United Nations estimates approximately 50,000 missing persons. According to reports from Reuters, the emergency is evolving into a highly complex crisis.

What Caused the Displacement Emergency?

Approximately 16,000 citizens abandoned their homes following the strong earthquakes. Their homes were completely destroyed or rendered uninhabitable by the tremors. Initial damage assessments were conducted between June 26 and 27.

Experts reviewed La Guaira, Capital District, Miranda, Aragua, and Carabobo. They discovered that half of the displaced are sheltered with family members. In contrast, 39% sleep on the streets or in public plazas.

The remaining victims survive in churches, schools, or improvised shelters. These facilities do not meet minimum standards for protection and hygiene. Therefore, family vulnerability continues to increase rapidly.

How Does This Crisis Affect Children?

The situation affecting children is one of the most critical issues. Surveys indicate that 17% of families reported separated minors. Many children are alone after surviving this natural disaster.

Additionally, this separation increases risks of exploitation, violence, and child abandonment. To address this serious problem, the UN Protection Group took action. This team includes the United Nations Children’s Fund.

They launched an urgent campaign to identify vulnerable minors. The primary objective is to locate their relatives and achieve family reunification. Additionally, they established centers to receive and sort essential humanitarian donations.

Despite efforts, assistance faces serious operational difficulties. The World Food Programme warned of profound logistical chaos. They are calling for resource organization to better assist disaster victims locally.
