Colombia faces a national emergency following a 7.4 magnitude earthquake. The earthquake struck the western and central country during the morning of August 10. The epicenter was located near San José del Palmar, in the department of Chocó. There was also severe damage in Risaralda, Valle del Cauca, and other areas of the coffee region.

The death toll continues to change as rescue operations advance. Initial reports spoke of 20 deaths, but later tallies raised the figure to more than 70. The Colombian government is maintaining search operations, medical care, and structural assessment.

The authorities ask the population to follow only official instructions. For U.S. citizens, Colombians abroad, and other foreigners, embassies activated assistance channels. The phone lines can help locate people, report emergencies, or request consular guidance.

What phone numbers are useful for an emergency?

In Colombia, the general emergency number is 123. That line handles medical situations, rescues, fires, and urgent security requests. U.S. citizens can call the Embassy of the United States in Bogotá. The official number is +57 (601) 275-2000.

The embassy also offers assistance outside regular hours. From the United States or Canada, citizens can call 1-888-407-4747. From Colombia or another country, the State Department receives calls at +1-202-501-4444. The official assistance abroad page keeps these lines available.

U.S. citizens should register in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. That registration allows you to receive alerts and facilitates communication during a crisis. It is also advisable to follow the official accounts of the U.S. Embassy in Bogotá. Authorities may change routes, schedules, and recommendations. The embassy warns that it does not replace rescue teams.
