Shooting at Bronx Clinic: Two Jamaican Immigrants Killed

Two Jamaican-born immigrants died in a shooting outside an urgent care clinic in the Bronx, an incident that shook the Soundview neighborhood at the start of the long Juneteenth weekend. The New York Police Department is investigating the attack, which occurred near the elevated line of the 6 train, while searching for those responsible.

The scene provided yet another instance of armed violence continuing to strike New York, even amid a general decline in homicides and shootings. The case also reopens questions about safety on residential streets, police response, and the human impact of these attacks on immigrant families.

What Happened Outside the Clinic?

The shooting occurred around 10:10 p.m. Thursday at Westchester Ave, near Harrod Ave, according to the New York Police Department. The victims, ages 53 and 43, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and were transported to Jacobi Hospital, where they died.

Police sources indicated that more than one person opened fire. Officers found the men dying at different points at the scene, one block apart from each other, according to reporting by News 12. The identities were not released immediately.

Police believe the attack occurred outside MedCare Urgent Care, a clinic that had closed hours earlier. The location is beneath the elevated structure of the 6 train, a zone of constant foot traffic. Evidence markers were also placed at the scene near a white vehicle.

The New York Police Department is reviewing surveillance footage to reconstruct the escape route. The assailants fled the scene shortly after the gunshots. So far, no arrests or charges have been announced.

Who Were the Victims?

The older victim worked as a home health care aide and lived near the location. His wife told Daily News that minutes before, he had played dominoes with friends and had taken his granddaughter home. Afterwards, he was struck by bullets.

The woman, identified as Angelique Irving Rutherford, described a devastating loss. She said they had been together for roughly 30 years and married for 13 years. She also noted they had two adult children. Her words reflect the direct impact a shooting has on working families.

The second man was known in the neighborhood, according to available information. Both were close to each other and lived in the area. This closeness is often common in neighborhoods where community networks are strong, but also where violence leaves more visible wounds.

Why Is This Case Concerning?

The case drew attention because it occurred at a time of statistical improvements, but not total safety. The Bronx has recorded a 10% decline in homicides and 3% decline in shootings, with 108 shootings so far this year. Still, it continues to account for more than one-third of the city’s homicides and shootings, according to NYPD figures.

The statistical reduction does not eliminate the perception of risk. For many residents, the question is where and when the next attack might occur. That affects daily routines, use of transportation, and confidence in spaces near home.
