Minor Detained After Shooting in Times Square

A violent shooting sparked mass panic on Thursday, June 18 in Times Square, one of the most heavily trafficked intersections in New York. It all started just before 4:00 p.m. local time at the intersection of West 44th Street and Seventh Avenue.

At that moment, security cameras captured 2 individuals dressed in black who suddenly burst into the crowded public street. These suspects drew firearms and began shooting in front of dozens of tourists and residents.

Therefore, the sound of the gunfire caused the crowd to run in terror seeking refuge quickly. This serious incident occurred shortly after a massive parade honoring the New York Knicks concluded. This team had just celebrated its first basketball championship in 53 years, filling the streets of lower Manhattan.

How Did It Happen?

The New York Police Department intervened immediately because it maintained a preventive deployment of 10,000 officers for the sports celebrations. Officers pursued the attackers down the street and managed to corner 1 of the suspects near an official parked vehicle. Authorities officially confirmed that the only person detained is 1 minor under 18 years old, though they withheld his identity for legal reasons.

Additionally, officers reported that they successfully recovered 1 firearm abandoned at the crime scene. For its part, the Fire Department reported the transfer of 1 person to a nearby hospital to receive urgent medical attention. However, initial police reports indicated there were no confirmed fatalities during this specific shooting. It is worth noting that just last weekend, another 17-year-old was shot in this same tourist area.

Finally, the Police Department announced street closures and public transportation interruptions around West 45th Street and Eighth Avenue. Security forces are requesting citizen cooperation as they process ballistic evidence and fully secure the crowded tourist perimeter of Manhattan.
