New York is investigating an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease on the Upper East Side, with 23 confirmed cases and 17 hospitalizations. Authorities believe the source is in one or several cooling towers in the Carnegie Hill and Yorkville neighborhoods.
The city’s Department of Health assured that tap water remains safe. It also indicated that the risk does not come from building plumbing, but from cooling towers that disperse contaminated droplets. The investigation continues and authorities are analyzing all towers in the area.
The alert is especially important for those who live, work, or recently visited zip codes 10028, 10128, and 10075. Legionnaires’ disease is not transmitted from person to person, but it can cause severe pneumonia if not detected in time.
What is Legionnaires’ Disease?
Legionnaires’ disease is a form of pneumonia caused by the Legionella bacterium. This bacterium grows in warm water and typically spreads in complex building systems. It can be found in showers, hot tubs, and cooling towers.

Infection occurs by inhaling small droplets of contaminated water. In hospitals, vulnerable patients can also become infected through contaminated water or ice. Symptoms typically take between 2 and 14 days to appear.
The most common signs are cough, fever, headache, muscle aches, and shortness of breath. In some cases, confusion, diarrhea, or nausea also appear. The disease gets its name from an outbreak that occurred in 1976 among attendees of an American Legion convention in Philadelphia.
Who is at Greater Risk?
Not everyone faces the same level of danger. The risk increases in people over 50 years old, smokers, people who vape, and those with chronic lung disease. Those with weakened immune systems are also at higher risk.
Quick diagnosis is key. If left untreated, the disease can worsen during the first week WHO. Complications include respiratory failure, shock, and kidney or multi-organ failure.
That is why authorities urge immediate medical attention for symptoms resembling the flu. This is more urgent if the person was recently in the affected area. Doctors can start appropriate antibiotics before the condition becomes complicated.
How is the Outbreak Being Controlled?
