Georgia Governor Brian Kemp suspended the fuel tax in Georgia through an executive order signed on Monday, September 28, 2026. The measure took effect at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, September 29 and will remain in effect until 11:59 p.m. on October 29, according to confirmation from the Georgia Department of Revenue.

What Does the Fuel Tax Suspension in Georgia Establish?

Kemp declared a state of emergency citing «global market volatility» as the primary cause of rising energy prices. The executive order suspends the collection of the special motor fuel tax for 30 consecutive days.

The suspended tax equals 33.3 cents per gallon of regular gasoline and 37.3 cents per gallon of diesel. One gallon is approximately 3.8 liters, so the exemption directly impacts the final price drivers pay at service stations.

The measure also applies to other fuels taxed under state code, including liquid propane gas, gasohol, ethanol, liquefied natural gas, and compressed natural gas. Local prepaid sales tax is not part of this suspension.

Why Did Gasoline Prices Rise in Georgia?

The average price of a gallon of gasoline in Georgia reached $4.19, according to data from the American Automobile Association (AAA) cited by CBS Atlanta. That figure is below the national average but represents a 10-cent increase from the previous week.

Diesel, meanwhile, reached an average of $6.24 per gallon in the state. Both fuels show significant increases compared to prices recorded a year ago, when gasoline cost around $2.87 per gallon.

According to an analysis by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the conflict between the United States and Iran has pressured international oil prices. That geopolitical tension is compounded by typical fluctuations in the global energy market.
