A cyclosporiasis outbreak has triggered alerts in Florida and the United States, where the CDC confirmed 843 cases since May 1. According to CDC information, the disease raised particular concern in Michigan, though cases continued to grow in Florida and other states. The parasite responsible, Cyclospora cayetanensis, was found in products such as fresh fruits and vegetables and could also have been present in untreated water, pools, or lakes. Unlike other infections such as norovirus, cyclosporiasis is not transmitted between people, but rather through consuming contaminated food or water with fecal matter.

Those who contracted cyclosporiasis typically experienced symptoms between two and 14 days after exposure to the contaminated source. The most common manifestations included frequent watery diarrhea, described by the CDC as explosive in some cases. Also reported were nausea, abdominal cramps, fatigue, mild fever, loss of appetite, and significant weight loss. Not all people showed symptoms, but most felt the urge to use the bathroom one week after infection.

In Florida, cases rose to 60 so far this year, with more than half reported during June. Miami-Dade County reported nine cases, while Lee led the state list with 11. Broward recorded five cases and Palm Beach reported two, while Monroe reported no infections to date. The spread of cyclosporiasis occurred primarily during spring and summer months, with a season extending from May 1 to August 21.

How is Cyclosporiasis Transmitted?

Cyclosporiasis is associated with consumption of fresh agricultural products washed or irrigated with contaminated water according to health authorities. According to CDC information, the use of excrement as fertilizer increased the risk of contamination in agricultural products. Basil, cilantro, raspberries, peas, and lettuce were linked with previous outbreaks in the country. The parasite can survive on surfaces and products for prolonged periods if not cleaned properly.

The parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis could also be present in untreated water, pools, or recreational lakes. Ingestion of contaminated water represents another important transmission route for the disease. People who travel abroad have greater risk of exposure in regions with different sanitary standards. More than 1,500 suspected cases remained under investigation and another 343 people became ill after traveling abroad.

The disease is an intestinal infection caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis and is not transmitted from person to person. According to CDC information, this distinguishes cyclosporiasis from other gastrointestinal infections such as norovirus or salmonella. Prevention requires avoiding consumption of food or water potentially contaminated with fecal matter. Rigorous hygienic practices are essential.
