3 Programs to Get Free or Cheap Food in New York

New York City offers three programs for free food access: Health Bucks for farmers market purchases, Get the Good Stuff to double SNAP benefits, and Groceries to Go for home delivery to people with chronic illnesses. At least 22,000 New Yorkers lost SNAP benefits due to tightened work requirements, making these programs increasingly important.

The city of New York offers three programs to obtain free food in New York. Health Bucks allows purchasing fruits and vegetables at farmers markets. Similarly, Get the Good Stuff doubles SNAP money for fresh products. On the other hand, Groceries to Go finances purchases and home deliveries for people with chronic illnesses.

These programs are becoming more relevant because at least 22,000 New Yorkers lost SNAP benefits following the tightening of work requirements driven by President Donald Trump’s administration. Additionally, the city allocated more than USD 850 million in this year’s budget to free meals and food assistance programs for low-income residents.

Why are these food programs necessary?

These programs are becoming more relevant amid SNAP cuts and pressure on households due to housing costs, food, and childcare. At least 22,000 New Yorkers lost benefits from the Food Stamp Program. This occurred after President Donald Trump’s administration expanded work requirements to participate.

Following federal changes, 15,000 refugees, asylum seekers or trafficking victims meet the conditions to receive the benefit. On the other hand, the anti-poverty organization Robin Hood found that 40% of families with children in the city face financial hardship each week to buy enough food. Similarly, food banks report an increase in users.

William Fowler, spokesman for the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, stated that the city administration allocated more than USD 850 million in this year’s budget to free meals, food programs and assistance for low-income New Yorkers. He also indicated that the 2026 budget increased funding for food banks. Additionally, it incorporated permanent funds for other programs.

«Its goal is to prevent food access before an emergency occurs, before someone has to resort to the last possible means to feed themselves,» said Abby de Riel, communications and development manager for Equity Advocates.

How does the Health Bucks program work?

Health Bucks is a USD 2 voucher system that New Yorkers can use at farmers markets, even if they don’t receive SNAP, reported Gothamist, a local news outlet. Those who receive SNAP can obtain USD 2 in vouchers for every USD 2 they spend at a farmers market. However, there is a cap of USD 10 per day.

Those who don’t receive that benefit can obtain vouchers through nonprofit organizations or religious groups to use them at those same markets. It’s worth noting that the city has more than 100 farmers markets and agricultural product sales stands during summer and fall.
