Additionally, the measures are part of laws approved during the latest legislative session. They establish more severe penalties in criminal and administrative matters throughout the state.

What Changes Do Tenants and Property Owners Face?

The HB 1293 law creates a specific criminal offense to punish fraud in housing rental applications. Starting October 1, providing false financial information or presenting falsified income statements will be classified as a third-degree felony.

This criminal classification can result in prison sentences for those who falsify pay stubs or identities to rent a property. Additionally, the legislation provides an expedited procedural tool for affected landlords.

Property owners may issue a formal seven-day notice to evict and recover the property without needing to pursue a prolonged ordinary civil suit. The measure aims to discourage the falsification of credit documents in the state’s real estate market.

How Do Traffic Rules Change for Drivers?

Three bills directly impact motorists driving on Florida’s highways and local streets. For example, the SB 488 law formally clarified that the use of decorative frames on license plates is legal. However, only if they do not obstruct the license plate number or the annual validation sticker.

The same legislation raised the minimum amount of property damage in traffic collisions from $500 to $2,000 that requires drivers to call police authorities. Additionally, it ratified the Florida residency criteria for registering motor vehicles.

For its part, the SB 490 law protects digital privacy by classifying email addresses registered with the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) as confidential. On the other hand, the provision authorizes the state agency to send official license suspension notices through electronic channels.

Additionally, the SB 246 law authorized the issuance of new themed vehicle license plates. Charitable organizations that receive funds from these plates must submit mandatory financial projections.

In the judicial arena, the HB 397 law authorizes police officers to make arrests without a court order when there is probable cause of violation of a no-contact order. This applies even during probation periods. On the other hand, the HB 429 law expands the criteria for classifying members of criminal organizations or gangs.
