The Florida Education Council approved on September 16, 2026 new restrictions on the use of artificial intelligence in public schools and state universities. The measures seek to protect student privacy, security, and academic integrity, and must be implemented in school districts by July 1, 2027.

What Changes for Florida Students?

The new rules apply from preschool programs through institutions of the State University System and the Florida College System. In public and charter schools, each district will have to include specific AI rules within their internet safety policies.

Students may not use artificial intelligence tools to complete graded assignments or assessments, unless the teacher explicitly authorizes their use. The rule seeks to differentiate between a tool permitted for learning and a system used to substitute for the student’s academic work.

Teachers and administrators must also receive training on safety, risks, limitations, and responsible use of these systems. Additionally, students may not use AI tools without supervision during educational activities.

Will Parents Have to Authorize AI Use?

Yes. Schools will have to inform parents or guardians when they approve an AI tool for direct educational use. The notice must include:

Name of the application or platform.
Grades and subjects where it will be used.
How the student will interact with the system.
Whether the tool will provide automatic responses or feedback.
Procedure for filing objections.
Comparable educational alternative that does not use AI.

The regulation establishes a prior authorization model. If a family does not permit direct use of the tool, the district must offer a teaching option without artificial intelligence with comparable educational quality.

What AI Tools Will Be Prohibited?

Schools may not adopt systems designed to meet students’ social or emotional needs. This includes tools that simulate friendship, companionship, or an emotional relationship with a minor.
