Interest has resurged for both sporting and commercial reasons. The recent World Cup final placed the Spain-Argentina showdown back in the spotlight. Additionally, Qatar maintains its interest in hosting the match and retains the rights tied to the event, according to Cadena SER.

The Finalissima would pit the champion of Euro 2024 against the winner of Copa America 2024. However, the context has changed completely. Spain just defeated Argentina 1-0 in the World Cup final in New Jersey. If the match happens, it will no longer be just a clash of continental champions. It will also be an immediate rematch.

What Happened With the March Cancellation?

The Finalissima was scheduled for March 27, 2026 at Lusail Stadium in Qatar. UEFA had already confirmed the venue, date, and time since December 2025.

But the plan collapsed on March 15. UEFA announced that the match could not be played in Qatar due to the political and security situation in the Middle East. It also explained that Spain had no available dates to reschedule it.

CONMEBOL confirmed the cancellation that same day. The South American body said that a definitive agreement was not reached and that the alternative date was not accepted. The Spanish Football Federation stated that it had offered different options, but conditions prevented holding the match.

What Dates and Venues Are Being Considered Now?

One option on the table is November 2026. However, that window still presents calendar problems. Spain has UEFA Nations League commitments against Czech Republic and England.

This obstacle limits the margin for adding another high-stakes match. Argentina, for its part, will need to reorganize its schedule after the World Cup.
