Gianni Infantino broke his silence and clarified that the suspension of Folarin Balogun was decided by FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee. The response came after Donald Trump admitted that he had intervened to request a review of the case.

The controversy grew because Balogun was cleared to play against Belgium in the round of 16. The change sparked criticism across Europe and opened a debate about sporting independence and political pressure.

What Did Infantino Say?

Infantino published a message on social media to distance himself. He affirmed that FIFA’s judicial bodies are independent and act autonomously. He also maintained that decisions are made based on the Disciplinary Code and the specific facts of each case. According to his account, he respects those resolutions, even when he doesn’t always agree with them.

That message sought to counter the idea that the White House directly influenced the ruling. However, the timeline fed suspicions about pressure exerted from political power. Infantino also explained that the situation should follow FIFA’s internal “legal process”. With that, he attempted to reinforce the image of a system separate from any external intervention.

How Was the Decision Justified?

FIFA applied Article 27 of its Disciplinary Code. That provision allows for the temporary suspension of the execution of an already-imposed sanction. The organization did not eliminate the red card. Rather, it put the suspension on hold for 1 year, under a probationary period.

If Balogun commits a similar violation, the sanction can be reactivated. That formula generated surprise because it is not standard practice in a World Cup. The Belgian federation questioned the ruling. It said the measure contradicts tournament regulations and the principle of automatic suspension for a direct red card.

Why Is the Controversy Exploding?

Because the case mixes sports, politics, and institutional power. When a president admits to calling the FIFA chief, the system’s independence comes under public pressure. Trump said he saw the play and didn’t think it was a foul. He also called the referee “suspect” and claimed Balogun is one of the team’s best players.

That stance provoked rejection in Belgium. Its coach, Rudi García, criticized the change and said the decision goes against the spirit of the game. UEFA was even harsher. It noted that the decision undermines competitive fairness.
