Trump Accused of Pursuing ICE Critics

President Donald Trump is accused of pursuing critics of ICE, amid new alerts over possible retaliation against protected political speech. The case has reignited the debate over freedom of expression, federal surveillance, and the use of immigration enforcement power.

The controversy arose following two incidents that occurred in New York. In both cases, federal agents approached individuals who had publicly criticized ICE, raising alarms among civil rights advocates.

What Sparked the Controversy?

The first case involves David Streever, a Rochester resident. According to his attorney, federal agents visited his home while he was traveling in Finland and left a warning for his wife. The warning was reportedly linked to an email sent months earlier to the ICE office. In that message, Streever harshly criticized then-interim director Todd Lyons, following the death of Renee Good during a protest against ICE.

Streever called Lyons «a monstrous being» and told him he would «never know peace.» His attorney, Adam Steinbaugh, argued that the message was political criticism, not a criminal threat. The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression backed that interpretation. ICE declined to comment on the case, citing an ongoing investigation. However, the agency stated it examines all credible threats against its personnel and leadership.

Why Are Advocates Concerned?

Civil organizations argue that the problem is not just legal. They fear that federal visits over critical messages will produce a chilling effect on citizens. Nathan Freed Wessler of the ACLU said that Americans have a constitutional right to criticize public officials. He also warned that these visits can dampen political debate.

Wessler argued that no one should be followed to their home or hotel for expressing opposition to the government. According to him, if protected speech is being punished, it would constitute an abuse of power. The argument gains strength because no criminal charges were announced. That absence reinforces the idea that the official response may have been more deterrent than punitive.

What Happened With the Election Worker?

The second incident involves Paigelynne Gonyea, an election worker in Syracuse. She said federal agents approached her at a polling site during New York’s primary election.

According to her account, the agents questioned her about a social media post regarding the same case of Renee Good’s death. In that post, Gonyea wrote that it would be a good day for Jonathan Ross to be charged. The
