Democrats Target Hispanic Voters on Texas Border

Democrat James Talarico is seeking to regain support among Hispanic voters on the Texas border. His Senate campaign combines criticism of the high cost of living with border security proposals.

The strategy comes after a notable electoral shift in 2024. Several border counties, previously favorable to Democrats, backed President Donald Trump by significant margins.

Talarico, a state legislator and former high school teacher, aspires to be the first Democrat to win a statewide election in Texas since 1994. His main rival is Republican Ken Paxton, the current state attorney general.

Why Did Hispanic Voting Change in Texas?

The Texas border has communities deeply connected with Mexico. There, migration, trade, security, and prices are not abstract issues, but part of daily life. During the Joe Biden administration, many residents criticized the increase in border crossings. Local authorities and business owners reported pressure on public services, businesses, and county finances.

The result was a visible shift in 2024. In Maverick County, for example, Joe Biden won by 10 percentage points in 2020, but Trump gained a 19-point advantage in 2024. The rising cost of living also influenced the decision of many households. The price of food, rent, insurance, and healthcare remains a central concern for working families.

Talarico is trying to turn that concern into the center of his message. The candidate argues that the economy favors major donors and corporations, while many families cannot cover their basic expenses. “So many politicians come to the border to demonize it and turn it into a weapon,” Talarico said during a stop in Eagle Pass. “We do the opposite. We show the beauty of our border communities,” he declared.

Talarico has centered his campaign on economic affordability. His speeches mention the cost of food, housing, property taxes, and healthcare. The candidate argues that workers face an unequal economic system. Additionally, he accuses Paxton of defending corporate interests and relying on support from major donors.
