UN Demands Clarification on Migrant Deaths in ICE Custody

The UN called on the United States to independently investigate the deaths of migrants in ICE custody. The call comes after 19 deaths in 2026 and an accelerated expansion of the migrant detention system.

High Commissioner Volker Türk warned that the lack of transparency weakens accountability. He also demanded guarantees for families and more information about the whereabouts of detainees during transfers.

Why Did the UN Intervene?

The United Nations’ concern is not limited to the number of deaths. It also points to conditions within detention centers, where sanitary failures and overcrowding episodes are reported.

According to the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, 5 of the official deaths in 2026 were classified as suicides. That figure raised alarms about mental health in custody.

Türk argued that the lack of clarity about each death prevents accountability. The UN also called for urgent measures to prevent more deaths and protect people in migrant custody.

The UN had already warned earlier in the year about the dehumanization of migrants. In January, the organization called for halting practices that, it said, affect due process and family unity.

What Happens Inside the Centers?

ICE operates with a detention network much larger than a year ago. According to the assessment cited by the UN, the detained population increased from 40,000 to 60,000 people.

The international organization also noted plans to bring that number to 90,000 by year-end. This growth is concerning because it increases pressure on doctors, guards, and oversight systems. Complaints about treatment include inadequate medical attention, poor quality food, and disease outbreaks in overcrowded facilities. There are also reports of use of force.

The Department of Homeland Security argues that the death rate in custody remains low relative to the detained population. Still, the absolute number of deaths continues to rise. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration notes that isolation and uncertainty can worsen emotional crises. In custody, these factors require constant monitoring.
