U.S. Revokes Tourism Visas: What to Do If Yours Is Canceled?

The State Department intensified reviews of tourism visas related to so-called birth tourism. The measure targets people who, according to authorities, applied for a visa to give birth in the United States and obtain citizenship for their child.

The Government created a task force with personnel from the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). According to the State Department, more than 600 visas were revoked in cases linked to birth tourism. The cancellation does not mean that all pregnant women are prohibited from traveling. The main problem is the stated purpose of travel and the information presented.

What Does the United States Consider Birth Tourism?

The authorities describe birth tourism as traveling for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States. The concern arises when a person uses a B-2 visa to obtain citizenship for their child. The visitor visa is not designed for that objective.

The policy had existed since 2020. The current Government expanded its application through an executive order signed on August 6, 2026. The order authorizes reviewing visas, denying entry, canceling permits, and applying permanent bans in certain cases. A pregnant woman can visit the United States for tourism, business, or legitimate family reasons. However, she must demonstrate that this is the primary purpose.

She must also explain how she will pay for medical care. Authorities can ask about insurance, funds, and return plans. The official consular regulation allows denial of a B-2 visa when the primary purpose is to give birth to obtain citizenship.

What Can Cause a Visa to Be Canceled?

A visa can be canceled if the Government concludes that the person lied. It can also be canceled if they used the permit for a different purpose. Officials can review forms, interviews, communications, and travel history. Contradictions between applications can increase suspicion.

The State Department mentioned cases of people who concealed previous pregnancies. It also described falsified medical documents and networks offering childbirth packages. A visa can be revoked even if it has not yet expired. The date printed on the document does not guarantee entry.
