TPS Alert: $2,000 Assistance Offered to Those Who Leave

The new TPS policy opens an exit route with $2,600 in financial assistance for those who self-deport, but forces thousands of migrants to choose quickly between regularizing their status or leaving the country. The measure follows a Supreme Court ruling that allowed the government to end TPS protections for Haitians and Syrians, potentially affecting hundreds of thousands of people.

The new TPS policy opens an exit route with financial assistance, but also forces thousands of migrants to decide quickly. The White House presents 2 options: regularize status or accept support to return to their country.

The measure comes following the ruling by the Supreme Court that allowed ending protections for Haitians and Syrians. This change could affect hundreds of thousands of people and reactivate large-scale deportations.

What did the government offer?

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said on CNN that TPS beneficiaries must seek permanent status or leave the country. He also stated that they will receive an airplane ticket and approximately $2,100 to reintegrate upon return.

DHS later clarified that the voluntary departure program offers $2,600 to those who self-deport. According to the official CBP Home page, the assistance includes free travel and support for organizing departure.

The government argues that this approach reduces costs and accelerates processes. DHS previously stated that a formal deportation costs on average $17,121 per person, including arrest, detention, and expulsion.

The Customs and Border Protection office also indicates that those who register for self-deportation may temporarily remain in lower detention priority. This window aims to allow time for travel arrangements and to order departure.

Why is there so much controversy?

The proposal was poorly received by conservative sectors, who believe that TPS should not become an indirect path to residency. They argue that the program was always intended to be temporary and exceptional.

On social media, several commentators called for revoking all adjustment options within the United States. They believe that migrants should have resolved their situation beforehand and not from U.S. territory.

Mullin later responded with a harder line message. He asserted that TPS is not permanent protection and that those without legal status must choose between self-deporting or being removed.

The Supreme Court also influenced the political shift. Its recent decision allowed the government to proceed with ending TPS for Haitians and Syrians, reducing immediate judicial barriers.
