The city of New York launched a new information campaign to connect immigrants with free legal services. The initiative aims to protect the community, answer questions about immigration status, and prevent fraud. The campaign is being distributed across the city’s five boroughs. Advertising materials and the main helpline, known as ActionNYC, will be available in 17 languages, including Spanish.

The announcement comes amid changes and legal disputes at the federal level. Recently, an appeals court determined that lawsuits against humanitarian parole programs lacked standing, which could reactivate certain processes or accelerate deportations depending on the decision of the current federal Government. In this environment of uncertainty, New York City authorities insist that legal assistance is essential. Access to a lawyer can determine whether a person receives asylum or faces deportation.

How Does the City’s Free Hotline Work?

The city’s helpline, coordinated by ActionNYC, serves all residents regardless of immigration status. It is a confidential and free service. The main contact number is 1-800-354-0365. People can also dial the municipal information number 311 and say «Immigration Legal» or «Ayuda legal de inmigración» aloud.

The hotline operates Monday through Friday, with varying hours. Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The campaign includes advertisements in English, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Haitian Creole, Arabic, French, Urdu, and other languages. The goal is to reach communities that frequently do not report abuse due to language barriers.

The service can guide asylum seekers, people seeking to renew work permits, and relatives of citizens. It can also refer cases to organizations authorized by the Government for advocacy. No money should be given to anyone for using this municipal service. ActionNYC funds community organizations so that immigrants receive representation at no cost.

New York State also maintains its own support network through the Office for New Americans (ONA). Its phone line, known as the New Americans Hotline, has an even broader reach.
