Marriage for ‘Green Card’: Fraud Network Dismantled

The Department of Justice accused nearly a dozen people of participating in a multimillion-dollar scheme. The scheme sought to help hundreds of Chinese citizens obtain residence cards fraudulently. Authorities reported on the case this Wednesday at a press conference.

According to court documents, U.S. citizens were paid up to 30,000 dollars. The money was in exchange for entering into false marriages with immigrants seeking permanent legal residence. The plot was orchestrated from New York for nearly a decade.

The accused charged up to 100,000 dollars for each residence card processed. This operation generated tens of millions of dollars for the group over the years. Authorities believe the group organized over 1,000 false weddings in total.

A Large-Scale Fraud Industry

Authorities described the case as one of the largest marriage fraud trials in U.S. history. The magnitude of the operation surprised even the federal prosecutors assigned to the case. The level of organization reflected years of criminal planning.

«This scheme was not a quick and fleeting operation, but rather a multi-billion-dollar cottage industry that prolonged over years,» said Attorney General Todd Blanche. According to him, the scheme sought to criminally help people who could not become legal citizens.

The charges were brought in a particular context within current migration policy. The Trump Administration has pushed strong restrictions on both legal and illegal immigration. The stated objective is to take firm action against those seeking to enter or naturalize irregularly.

False Weddings with Photo Sessions Included

After recruiting U.S. citizens, the accused organized false weddings with the appearance of legitimacy. In some cases, they even staged family photo sessions at restaurants. The objective was to simulate a real marital relationship to immigration authorities.

Subsequently, the accused helped the immigrants through the entire application process. The procedure sought to obtain permanent legal residence status in the United States. Every step of the process was carefully designed to avoid suspicion.

«These scams have a real cost. They rob our country of the ability to know who should and should not be allowed to enter the United States,» Blanche said. The 11 implicated individuals face charges in a formal indictment filed in New York. As of this Wednesday, it was unclear whether they had legal representation.

The State Department Against ‘Birth Tourism’

In parallel, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the creation of a specific task force. Its objective is to combat fraud related to so-called «birth tourism.» The announcement was made through a message posted on his official account.

«Sophisticated birth tourism networks are benefiting from the exploitation of U.S. laws,» Rubio wrote. He explained that these networks instruct foreigners to defraud the country’s visa system. Additionally, they organize trips, accommodations, and falsify documents to achieve their objectives.

According to the official, this entire scheme seeks to allow foreign citizens to obtain citizenship for their children born on U.S. territory. The State Department formally established a Birth Tourism Prevention Task Force. Its function is to review visa holder activity worldwide.

Over 600 Visas Revoked in One Month

Rubio detailed that the task force seeks to dismantle illegal birth tourism networks systematically. It also aims to end what he characterized as «an appalling abuse of our nation’s laws.» Initial results already show significant impact in a short time.

«In just one month, the Birth Tourism Prevention Task Force has taken measures to revoke over 600 visas of foreign citizens from around the world,» the secretary affirmed. He added that the initiative «will continue protecting our nation from this abuse» in the coming months.

The official concluded his message with a forceful statement about the State Department’s next actions. «The State Department will use all available tools to dismantle birth tourism networks and defend the integrity of U.S. citizenship,» Rubio assured. Both cases reflect a notable hardening of migration surveillance in recent months.
