ICE to Open Center in Louisiana for Deporting Children

The U.S. government is advancing construction of a new detention center in Alexandria, Louisiana. The main objective is to house migrant families and unaccompanied children near an airport to significantly accelerate their direct deportation processes.

The current administration seeks to eliminate constant logistical transportation problems. Previously, authorities had to move minors from shelters across the country to planes late at night. This new complex, with 528 available beds, will be strategically located next to the landing strips.

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) describes these facilities as a "transit zone." According to official documents, migrants would remain there for a maximum of 72 hours before flying. Authorities insist it should not be called a prison and prohibited the use of traditional bars at the facility.

Why Does This Concern Migrant Advocates?

Various civil organizations fear that the 72-hour timeframe could quickly turn into weeks. Leecia Welch, an attorney with Children’s Rights, warned about the high risks of this massive project. She publicly stated that this expansion of the deportation system is unprecedented in the country.

Federal law establishes that unaccompanied minors must go to adequately supervised shelters. These facilities are typically administered by the Department of Health and Human Services. However, this government agency will not participate in operating the new center at Alexandria airport.

Activists also denounce that many families agree to return voluntarily under strong psychological pressure. Airport officials claim the center will only receive people who decide to self-deport, oddly labeling it as a local "humanitarian initiative."

Who Will Manage These New Facilities?

Management of the complex was awarded to LaSalle Corrections, a recognized prison contractor. Direct operations will be handled by LaSalle Family Foundation, its nonprofit branch. This company has a long history of operating other private detention centers throughout the southern region.

The track record of this specific contractor has generated strong criticism recently. Since April, at least two detainee deaths have been reported at another center operated by LaSalle in the same state of Louisiana.
