Thousands of immigrants face deportation proceedings without legal representation in the United States. For many, hiring a private lawyer is impossible due to high costs. Nonprofit organizations offer free assistance, but often have long waiting lists. Additionally, some communities lack sufficient immigration specialists.
The «Lawyer of the Day» program seeks to fill part of that gap. Its volunteers go to immigration courts and guide people without representation. The initiative does not guarantee a permanent lawyer for each case. However, it can offer urgent support before or after a hearing.
How Does the «Lawyer of the Day» Program Work?
Attorney Kamalpreet Chohan coordinates a program with the California Immigration Project. Her team visits the immigration court in Sacramento, California. On a recent day, she reviewed a list with 57 people summoned. None had legal representation, according to what she explained during the activity.
Chohan speaks with immigrants after their hearings. She also reviews forms, identifies missing documents and explains next steps. A volunteer interpreter helps people who prefer to communicate in Spanish. Additionally, the program organizes community workshops on asylum applications.
