DNC vs. Trump: The Fight Over ICE’s Future

The Democratic National Committee approved 2 conflicting resolutions on the future of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). One calls for eliminating the agency and dismantling the federal immigration detention system. The other proposes deep reforms without eliminating ICE.

Both resolutions were approved during the DNC’s summer meeting in Austin, Texas. However, neither automatically changes the law nor stops current operations. The debate occurs while the Trump Administration expands arrests and deportations. For this reason, the decisions could influence the midterm elections in November.

What Resolutions Did the Democratic Party Approve?

The elimination resolution asks Congress to create a new immigration structure. It also proposes establishing pathways to citizenship and greater labor protections. The document requests closing private detention centers. Additionally, it proposes releasing most people detained for civil infractions.

The resolution also requests limiting funds from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The restriction would apply as long as workplace raids, courthouse arrests, and operations near schools continue. The Resolutions Commission approved that proposal by 25 votes against 12. Later, the full DNC approved both measures through a voice vote.

The reform proposal was promoted by DNC Chairman Ken Martin. His text seeks to ban agents with covered faces and require visible identification. Martin said there is widespread opposition to the current approach of ICE and the Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP). «There has to be a better way,» Martin said according to ABC News.

Do the Resolutions Eliminate ICE Immediately?

No. DNC resolutions have no force of law. Congress would have to pass legislation and the president would have to sign it. Additionally, Democrats do not currently control all the necessary bodies to approve that reform. The outcome of the midterm elections could change that situation.

The resolutions also do not replace the party’s official platform. National platforms are approved every 4 years during the presidential convention. The next official platform will be established at the 2028 convention. Still, the vote reflects internal pressure within the party. The Associated Press confirmed that the resolutions are symbolic and do not change the official platform.
