The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) elevated to Class I the recall of nearly 1.6 million dozen eggs. The classification represents the agency’s highest risk level. It means that consuming the product could cause serious consequences or death.
The recall affects white and brown cage-free eggs. The products were distributed in Kroger, Brookshire stores and other regional retailers. The recall is related to a Salmonella outbreak that sickened 98 people in 17 states. Additionally, 26 patients were hospitalized.
Which eggs are included in the recall?
The recalled products were distributed by Midwest Poultry Services. The company recalled approximately 1,589,577 dozen eggs. The recall includes medium white and brown eggs. It also covers products sold in packages of 12 and 30 units.

The FDA warns that checking the brand is not enough. Consumers must verify the plant code and Julian date. The information appears printed on the side of the carton. The Julian date identifies the day of the year the product was packaged.
The plant code must be P-1950 or 0840962. The Julian date must be between 157 and 184. The best-by date may be between July 20 and August 17, 2026. Eggs should be discarded even if they appear normal. Salmonella does not always change the smell, color, or appearance of food. For this reason, a visual inspection does not determine if an egg is contaminated.
Where were the eggs sold?
The products were distributed in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. They also reached Kroger and Brookshire Grocery stores. The FDA indicated there were other regional retailers and food service customers. The recall report published by the FDA should be consulted before consuming stored eggs.1367
Families who purchased eggs in those states should check their cartons. They should also ask restaurants or cafes if they used the recalled products. Consumers should return the eggs to the store to request a refund. If the store does not accept them, they should contact the distributor.
