Christopher Nolan’s new film, The Odyssey, arrived in controversy before it reached theaters. A week before its release, the film already concentrates debates about casting, literary fidelity, and visual decisions.

The case has grown because the adaptation touches one of the most influential texts in Western culture. Also weighing in is the budget of $250 million and a cast full of global figures.

Why did the film generate so much discussion?

The first controversy arose with preview screenings. Nolan decided that those projections would be only for critics and journalists from traditional media, and not for digital content creators. That decision fueled the idea that the studio wanted to control the initial conversation.

The reaction on social media was fierce from the moment the first images were published. Many comments questioned the casting, the dialogue, and the setting. In Hollywood, an early negative campaign usually influences public perception, even before the official release.

The discussion also reflects a broader tension. Current blockbusters no longer compete only in theaters; they also battle on social networks, forums, and opinion media. That’s why each leaked image can become a premature judgment.

What objections did the cast receive?

One focus of criticism was Lupita Nyong’o. In the film, she plays Helen of Troy, a role that in cinema is usually associated with blonde actresses. Some online reactions assumed that the choice broke with a supposed traditional image of the character.

That reading ignores that Helen belongs to a mythical narrative, not a closed historical record. The Iliad and the Odyssey are works of classical fiction, adapted throughout the centuries with changes in era, tone, and representation. Still, social networks tend to treat any reinterpretation as if it were a betrayal.

Elon Musk became the most visible critic of that choice. Without having seen the film, he wrote that Nolan “desecrated” The Odyssey to make it eligible for awards. He also amplified messages accusing the film of using diversity as a commercial calculation.

How did Elliot Page enter the controversy?

Elliot Page was also a target of attacks, though based on a rumor that didn’t match the actual cast. Online, it was claimed that he would play Achilles, but that character is not part of the film. Instead, IMDb lists him as a Greek warrior named Sinon.

The criticism against Page relied on stereotypes about the body and image of the classical hero. That type of reaction shows how certain debates about identity are quickly distorted on social networks. The conversation stopped being about acting and became about prejudices.

The controversy reached another layer when Musk and other users linked the cast to Hollywood Academy representation rules. That interpretation is not supported by the film, but it did fuel a narrative of
