The president asserted that the architectural modification responds to an express request made by commanders of the U.S. Armed Forces. In his public message, the Republican leader specified the operational scope of the facilities:

«At the express request of the United States Armed Forces, and for reasons of national security, I have agreed to transform the magnificent Triumphal Arch into a first-rate military complex and triumphal arch.»

Trump detailed that the building will allow storage, housing, and immediate deployment of drone and sniper contingents on the roof and in the plaza. Additionally, the structure will feature reinforced storage tanks to safeguard large quantities of military ammunition.

What Are the Characteristics and Location of the Project?

The colossal work, informally called «Independence Arch,» is planned to be erected along the Potomac River, in the Memorial Circle area. The chosen site is located between the Arlington Memorial Bridge and the entrance to Arlington National Cemetery.

The design features a reinforced concrete structure clad in granite with a height of 76 meters (250 feet). The projected height will far exceed the 30 meters of the Lincoln Monument, positioning itself only behind the 88 meters of the Federal Capitol.

The monument’s summit will be topped by a golden statue representing the Lady of Liberty flanked by two patriotic eagles. To enable transit and defense operations, the plans integrate six interior staircases, five mechanical elevators, and a perimeter equipped with security bollards.

The project promoted by Trump generated strong rejection among architects, historical commissions, and neighborhood organizations in the capital. Various experts warn that the tower’s scale will disturb the solemn perspective of the historic axis toward Arlington cemetery.

Although the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) preliminarily authorized the height under the requirement of installing an eternal flame on top, the National Capital Planning Commission is keeping the review on pause.
