New York Seeks to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages Following Tragic Death

New York has reignited the debate over horse-drawn carriages following the tragic death of Romanch Mahajan, an 18-year-old teenager. The young man died after falling from a carriage in Central Park and striking his head while attempting to help his mother.

The incident occurred during a family trip from India to celebrate his high school graduation. According to The New York Times, the father recounted that the horse bolted when the driver had stepped away to take photographs. The family had just arrived in the city and was visiting some of its most popular attractions.

The death triggered an immediate response. The Central Park Conservancy called for suspending the industry until stronger safety measures are implemented. It also renewed its support for the so-called Ryder’s Law, the proposal seeking to ban carriages in the city.

What Happened in Central Park?

Romanch Mahajan was with his parents and younger brother when the accident occurred. His mother fell from the carriage and he jumped to help her. At that moment he lost his balance, fell to the ground, and suffered the fatal blow.

His father, Deepak Mahajan, said the young man was shouting “Mom!” while trying to protect her. The family suffered minor injuries, but the emotional toll was immense. The father summed up the tragedy with a harsh phrase: “It took away my son’s dreams.”

The Central Park Conservancy stated that this case cannot be treated as an isolated incident. The organization noted that in the last 13 months there were 8 incidents involving horses in the park. Furthermore, it recalled that this would be the first human fatality linked to a carriage in more than 150 years.

The city has yet to offer a definitive reform. But political pressure mounted quickly. The New York City Council announced a hearing next month on Ryder’s Law. Council President Julie Menin stated on X that “the time to act is now.”
