New York Opens 5 New Schools of Art, Technology, and Hip Hop

Five public schools in New York began receiving students this Thursday at various locations throughout the city. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels announced the new schools last May. The opening marks the start of the 2026-2027 school year in the city’s public school system.

The new educational centers depart from traditional models. Each responds to specific needs of its community, from students with disabilities to young people interested in urban culture.

A public school where hip hop enters the classroom

The Bronx School of Hip-Hop opened its doors in the Claremont neighborhood of the Bronx. The secondary school will receive between 115 and 125 ninth-grade students in its first year. Its offerings will gradually expand to cover all four high school grades.

The school uses hip hop culture as its pedagogical foundation. Students will be able to explore DJing, graffiti, and breaking while meeting Regents standards and advanced placement (AP) courses.

«Hip hop is like our main export from the Bronx,» said Jason Reyes, founding principal of the school, to NY1. Reyes explained that the approach seeks to help students see themselves reflected in the academic curriculum.

Four other educational proposals for different grade levels

In Long Island City, Queens, the Academy of Cultural Excellence will accept students from Pre-K through fifth grade. Its model prioritizes student participation, community building, and academic rigor, according to the city’s Department of Education.

The Queens Academy for Innovative Learning in Astoria will serve middle and high school students with disabilities. It will combine STEM subjects with learning based on work experience.

In Woodside, West Q Elementary will accept students from kindergarten through fifth grade. It will be an open-enrollment school, allowing families from different parts of District 24 to apply for admission.

Additional support for students with special needs

The Bronx School of Arts & Exploration will serve students from pre-K through eighth grade. The school, located in District 75, is designed for students with autism and other developmental or learning needs.

Its model combines visual and performing arts with core academic subjects. The goal is to support communication, independence, and academic growth through performance-based assessments.

«Each school brings something unique, but together they reflect a fundamental belief: there is an option for every student and every family,» Chancellor Samuels said during the May announcement.

An educational expansion that addresses school overcrowding

The five schools seek to increase seat capacity in neighborhoods with histories of overcrowding. They also expand access to District 75 seats, which serves students with severe disabilities, closer to their homes.

«Our students deserve the best,» Mamdani said in the official statement from the mayor’s office. The mayor added that the city aims to place the arts at the center of public education.

The opening of these schools comes alongside a broader expansion of school infrastructure. Mamdani announced this week the addition of 10 more facilities for the new school year. Among them is an expansion of 553 seats for middle school students at John Dewey High School in Brooklyn.

Why do these schools use unconventional models?

School authorities introduced the new schools during the annual new schools fair in Manhattan. There, Chancellor Samuels emphasized that the opening reflects a more inclusive vision of the education system.

These types of theme-based schools have gained traction in school districts across the country in recent years. The central idea is to connect the academic curriculum with students’ real interests to improve attendance and performance.

In the case of the Bronx School of Hip-Hop, the proposal extends beyond the classroom. The school plans open mic nights and a team dedicated to producing its own podcast. Each academic unit will culminate with a public presentation or exhibition.

A context of growth for NYC’s school system

The opening of these five schools comes amid other recent changes in the city’s education system. New York already established rules on the use of artificial intelligence in public classrooms this year. It also expanded the free 3-K program in neighborhoods with high demand for seats.

Families interested in any of these five schools can check the admission process on the official NYC Department of Education portal (schools.nyc.gov). Some, like West Q Elementary, accept applications from outside their original geographic area.

For families with children with disabilities or special needs, both the Queens Academy for Innovative Learning and Bronx School of Arts & Exploration offer direct points of contact through their school coordinators. New York’s public school system serves approximately 900,000 students each year, one of the largest in the country.
