Benjamin Netanyahu and Zohran Mamdani became the center of a new political tension in New York. The Israeli prime minister accused the mayor of using the arrest threat as a “smokescreen,” while Mamdani insists he is evaluating the legal options available.

What Sparked the New Clash?

The conflict reignited after Mamdani said he is analyzing whether the New York Police Department could arrest Netanyahu if he travels to the city in September. The visit would coincide with the UN General Assembly, one of the most sensitive diplomatic events of the year in New York.

From Israel, Netanyahu’s office responded harshly. In a message posted on X, it accused the mayor of wanting to divert attention from his mistakes and of attacking the leader of the Jewish State. It also asked him to focus on New York’s problems rather than pursuing foreign leaders.

Mamdani, for his part, told The New York Times in an interview that he believes Netanyahu “belongs in The Hague.” He added that his office is maintaining an active conversation with the city’s legal department to determine whether he has the authority to order an arrest.

The discussion is not only political. It is also legal. Mamdani acknowledged that he is uncertain whether the New York Police Department can arrest a foreign leader. That is why his legal team is reviewing what local and federal law actually permits.

The starting point is the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court against Netanyahu in 2024. Mamdani maintains that this warrant must be respected, even though the United States is not a member of that tribunal. This difference complicates any attempt to enforce it on U.S. territory.
