The New York Police Department is investigating two incidents that occurred in Brooklyn where at least 15 people were seen entering and exiting sewers during the early morning hours. The incident sparked curiosity and concern among residents, but authorities rule out a threat to the public.

The first incident occurred on Thursday, May 28, around 11:00 p.m., when witnesses observed a group of people remove a manhole cover near the intersection of McDonald Avenue and Colin Place, in the Gravesend area. At least seven people descended into the sewage system and remained there for approximately 3 hours.

They were subsequently seen exiting the drainage system around 2:00 a.m. on Friday, May 29. As police investigated that report, a second incident occurred nearby around 1:00 a.m. Friday, when a group of eight people was seen entering the sewage near the intersection of Heyward Street and Bedford Avenue.

What Did Authorities Say About the Incidents?

According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), the individuals emerged shortly before 4:00 a.m., boarded a vehicle, and left the area. To date, they have not identified those involved nor made any arrests. The NYPD’s Intelligence Division continues to analyze the facts to determine if there is any connection.

So far, investigators have not been able to establish a direct connection between both incidents in the sewers. One of the main lines of investigation for police is that the subjects could be searching for valuable items or objects that accidentally fall through storm drain grates and end up in the city’s drainage system.

Despite the unusual nature of the case and the interest it has generated, authorities concluded that there was no threat to public safety. No criminal activity was detected nor damage to the water or sewage infrastructure system. Specialized NYPD teams conducted inspections in the reported areas along with personnel from the Department of Environmental Protection and the New York Fire Department.

Why Is It Dangerous to Enter Sewers?

Although no material damage, injuries, or emergency situations were reported, authorities reminded that unauthorized entry into the sewage system is illegal. Officials from the Department of Environmental Protection warned that sewers contain multiple risks to health and life.

Officials pointed out that sewers present potentially fatal toxic gases, confined spaces, unstable surfaces, and dangers of sudden flooding. Therefore, no one should enter the drainage system without authorization and specialized protective equipment.

The risk of toxic gases is particularly high. These gases can be odorless and invisible, but cause loss of consciousness or even death within minutes. Confined spaces also make it difficult to exit quickly in case of emergency.
