Mamdani launches «NYC’s gossip,» a Spanish-language channel to connect Latinos

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani launched an unprecedented initiative Monday to connect with Spanish speakers in the city. It is «The Official Gossip of NYC,» a direct communication channel in Spanish through WhatsApp. The goal is to deliver municipal information firsthand to those who frequently are the last to receive it. The initiative seeks to break down the language barrier that separates thousands of Latino families from available public services.

Nearly 30% of the residents of the Big Apple are of Hispanic origin. Many of them are immigrants who use Spanish as the primary language in their homes. However, municipal information rarely reaches them directly and accessibly in that language. This gap has been a historical problem for the city government agencies.

«Every New Yorker deserves to know what the City does for them, in the language they speak at home,» Mamdani said exclusively to El Diario NY. The mayor explained that he chose WhatsApp and Instagram for a practical and concrete reason. «Spanish-speaking New Yorkers already use these platforms daily, so that’s where we’ll reach them,» he affirmed.

A single window for information in Spanish

One of the biggest problems the Mamdani administration identifies is the dispersion of municipal information. Residents must navigate between dozens of different agencies to find what they need. This is especially difficult for those who do not speak English. The new initiative seeks to solve that maze with a simple and direct approach.

«Instead of asking people to navigate a dozen agencies, we’re bringing all the information together in one place and in Spanish,» the mayor explained. The WhatsApp channel will publish a weekly news summary every Wednesday morning. They called it «Chisme Brief» and it will contain key updates and announcements from the City. All in the language Hispanic families use in their daily lives.

The content will not be limited to cold administrative data. There will also be exclusive photos and videos of the mayor at community events. Visits to neighborhoods and cultural celebrations in the city will be included. Live broadcasts with municipal officials will also be part of the proposal.

Housing, immigration, and emergencies: priority topics

The topics the channel will cover reflect the most urgent concerns of the Hispanic community. Housing, transportation, public services, and immigration resources are part of the information menu. Emergency announcements will also be issued when the situation requires it. This last point is especially relevant in a context of migrant uncertainty.

In times of constant fear among immigrants in the five boroughs, the channel will also provide resources related to migration issues. The administration recognizes that many families do not seek official information due to distrust or language barriers. Delivering that information directly to their phones seeks to change that dynamic at its root. «The City Hall should not be something one has to go out and look for,» Mamdani said.

In addition to the WhatsApp channel, the City relaunched its Spanish-language Instagram account. There, Hispanic people will be able to follow available programs and news from a dozen different agencies. The idea is for both platforms to work in a complementary way. One for immediate information and another for more visual and detailed content.

The community receives the news with excitement and expectations

The response among Spanish-speaking residents was immediate and enthusiastic. Berenice González, a Mexican mother of family living in the city, celebrated the announcement with relief. She said that one of the reasons why she sometimes fails to access municipal programs is the dispersion of information. «Many times it’s in English and we don’t always understand everything,» she explained.

«That idea is really liked, because it’s going to be very helpful to us, especially for Latino families where there are parents like me who don’t speak English,» González said. She also took the opportunity to make a personal request to the mayor. «Something I would like is for him to speak in Spanish in his messages, the way De Blasio did,» she noted. She recalled seeing him in a campaign ad speaking the language fluently.

The initiative is part of a broader communications effort by the Mamdani administration. The mayor seeks to position himself as a real bridge between municipal government and immigrant communities.
