The FBI issued an urgent warning to South Florida residents regarding the growing wave of robberies and assaults linked to the use of dating applications. According to FBI information, the federal agency has detected an increase in cases where people seeking to establish romantic connections become victims of violent crimes. Due to this situation, the trend has raised alarms among authorities. They consider this new criminal modality an emerging threat to the security of those using digital services for social connections.

The agency’s concern lies in the fact that, while scams in virtual environments are not a recent phenomenon, the current scheme detected in South Florida is characterized by the violence with which criminals act. Unlike previous frauds that typically limited themselves to emotional manipulation or theft of personal data, the new incidents reported involve in-person meetings. In these cases, victims face real physical risks. Additionally, the FBI has emphasized that the use of force and intimidation marks an escalation in the dangerousness of these crimes.

Adam Berry, interim special agent in charge of the FBI’s Miami office, expressed concern about the ease with which criminals gain the trust of users of these platforms. According to his statements, a criminal posing as a legitimate romantic interest can take advantage of a potential victim seeking a romantic relationship. Consequently, the authority insisted that those using dating applications must exercise extreme caution. Additionally, he recommended not letting one’s guard down around strangers.

What is the criminals’ modus operandi?

Those responsible for these robberies employ a well-defined pattern to target victims in South Florida. According to the FBI’s Miami office, criminals use dating applications to contact people seeking a romantic relationship. After striking up a conversation and building trust, they propose an in-person meeting, generally at private or secluded locations. When the victim agrees to meet, they are surprised by the attackers who rob them of money and valuables.

In the assaults, attackers steal money and valuables, and in some cases force victims to withdraw cash from ATMs. The level of violence used is a matter of particular concern for the federal American agency. In several of the investigated incidents, criminals have used firearms to intimidate their victims. This dynamic represents a qualitative leap from traditional virtual scams because physical violence becomes the primary instrument of coercion.

Victims not only lose their belongings but also see their physical and emotional integrity compromised. As a result of these incidents, the FBI has classified this scheme as an elevated risk for dating app users in the region. According to FBI reports, the modus operandi stems from deception and manipulation.
