Democrat Graham Platner Accused of Sexual Assault

A sexual assault accusation shook Monday the race for the U.S. Senate in Maine. Democratic candidate Graham Platner faces the most serious allegation of his campaign. The complaint arrives at a critical moment for the Democratic Party, which seeks to regain control of the Senate. And it sows chaos in a contest that was considered strategically key.

The accusation comes from Jenny Racicot, 41 years old and a Maine resident. Politico magazine reported that Racicot is Platner’s ex-girlfriend and alleges that in 2021 he showed up at her house without warning and in a state of intoxication. According to her account, the current candidate sexually forced himself on her during that encounter. CNN also published an interview with Racicot on the same Monday, widening the reach of the case.

«I remember he grabbed me by the pelvis and acted very aggressively toward me,» Racicot told Politico. «I remember the exact moment I thought: ‘This is no longer my decision.'» Her words describe a scene that left a deep mark on her for years. The decision to make it public now, she said, is so that voters have «a complete picture of who he is as a person.»

Platner denies everything and puts his candidacy in doubt

The Democratic candidate categorically and publicly rejected the accusations. «These accusations are disturbing, serious, and false,» he stated in an official statement. He also released a video in which he called Racicot’s account «categorically false.» His campaign added that the allegations are «orchestrated and coordinated by establishment operatives from outside the state.»

However, Platner himself hinted that his candidacy could be at risk. In the video he acknowledged being «aware of the political repercussions this will entail.» He added that he is taking «time to reflect on the best path forward.» His words sounded more like a pause than an outright denial of his electoral intentions.

The campaign also sent a message to his supporters that raised more questions than answers. «All options remain on the table,» the statement indicated. It said that each decision would be «guided by the values that united us in the first place.» This open formulation fueled rumors about a possible withdrawal from the electoral race.

A pattern that had been building for weeks

Racicot’s accusation did not arrive in isolation. Weeks earlier, the New York Times had published an article with testimonies from several women who had dated Platner. All remembered behaviors they described as «disturbing.» Racicot already appeared in that report, although without revealing all the details of what happened in 2021.

In that interview with the Times, she recounted that Platner arrived at her house drunk that year, despite having asked him not to come. She offered no further details at that time about what happened. Last week, NBC News reported that influencer and attorney Cheyenne Hunt was collaborating with several women who had contacted her. All had had personal relationships with the candidate.

On Monday, Hunt revealed that Racicot was one of those women and released a forceful statement. «Brave women stepped forward, taking great personal risk, to bring the truth to light,» she stated. She was more direct in assessing the consequences: «In light of the new accusations, it is absolutely undeniable: Graham Platner is not fit for the Senate.» Platner canceled several public events during the weekend prior to publication.

The electoral calendar further complicates the situation

The timing of when the accusation emerged is not a minor detail. Platner’s campaign pointed out that the news appeared exactly one week before July 13. That is the deadline established by Maine law for a candidate to withdraw his candidacy from the general election. The temporal coincidence was used as an argument to question the motivations behind the report.

«It is no coincidence that this story emerges one week before the deadline,» the campaign stated. It also recalled that Platner won the Democratic primary on June 9 with more than 70% of the vote. His candidacy had been presented as the most viable to face Republican Senator Susan Collins in November. That electoral strength is now in question.

If Platner decided to withdraw, the Democratic Party would have until July 27 to designate a replacement. Among the names circulating in internal party polls are actor Patrick Dempsey and candidates who failed to secure the gubernatorial nomination. One of the polls reviewed also evaluated public perception of Troy Jackson and Nirav Shah. The party is seeking options, although Platner’s campaign insisted he will not withdraw.

Politico also reported that it reviewed messages between Racicot and her therapist. It also spoke with two people to whom she had recounted the incident in 2023. This documentary support adds weight to an accusation that the candidate continues to deny. The future of a key Senate race now depends on decisions that will be made in the coming days.
