Chicago: 6 Shootings in 12 Hours Leave 5 Dead and a Child Among the Victims

A series of 6 shootings in less than 12 hours left 5 people dead and 4 wounded in Chicago. Among the victims is a 13-year-old child who was shot in the foot and was reported in good condition.

The incidents occurred between the afternoon of Thursday, July 23, and the early morning hours of Friday, July 24. The Chicago Police Department is investigating each case separately and has not reported any arrests linked to this series of attacks.

The violence occurs weeks after another critical period in the city. During the Juneteenth weekend, police recorded at least 24 shootings, with 39 people shot and 6 killed, according to ABC7 Chicago.

Where Did the Shootings Occur?

The first fatal attack occurred around 5:35 p.m. in the 5900 block of South Ellis Avenue, in Hyde Park. Officers found a 27-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man inside a vehicle, both with bullet wounds to the head. Both victims were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. They were later pronounced dead. Authorities recovered a weapon at the scene and are analyzing whether it is connected to the attack.

Around 6:50 p.m., a second shooting occurred in the 3800 block of West Adams Street, in West Garfield Park. Two people fired at a 49-year-old man who was standing near the sidewalk and at a minor who was inside a vehicle. The man, identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner as James Gooden, suffered a bullet wound to the head. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he died. The child was taken to Stroger Hospital and was in stable condition.

At 11:12 p.m., a third shooting left another person dead on South Shore Drive, in Hyde Park. A man and a 25-year-old woman were inside a parked car when someone fired from another vehicle. The man was struck in the abdomen and died at the University of Chicago Medical Center. The woman suffered a wound to the shoulder and remained hospitalized in stable condition.

What Other Attacks Is Police Investigating?

The fourth fatal shooting was reported around 12:24 a.m. Friday in the 5100 block of North Winthrop Avenue, in Uptown. A 21-year-old man was inside a vehicle when another person approached and opened fire. The victim was shot in the neck. He was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition but later died. Police have not released his identity or the possible motive for the attack.

A fifth case was reported at 10:19 p.m. in the 6900 block of South Cornell Avenue, in South Shore. A 36-year-old man, inside his parked vehicle, heard a loud noise and then felt pain in his leg. The man went on his own to the University of Chicago Medical Center. Doctors reported him in good condition. The investigation continues.
