California DMV Would Revoke 11,000 Licenses for Fraud

Thousands of California drivers could lose their licenses next month. The reason is anomalies detected in their written exam results theoretical. State officials reported this in recent weeks.

Drivers throughout the state have been receiving warning letters. The document requires them to retake their written exams within 30 days. Those who fail to do so risk losing their active licenses.

David Specht, a Sacramento resident, received one of these letters last month. «It’s a big problem for people who may not have reliable transportation,» he told the Los Angeles Times. His testimony reflects the concerns of many affected drivers.

Eleven thousand people must retake the exam

A spokesperson for the California Department of Motor Vehicles confirmed the figure to the newspaper. Approximately 11,000 people will need to retake their knowledge exams. However, the agency did not specify what irregularities were detected.

The Independent also contacted the DMV for more details. So far, the agency has not provided additional information about the process. Letters were sent to those who took their tests between July 2025 and April 2026.

Specht added that the measure hits certain vulnerable groups harder. «A single parent raising a child has to ask for time off work and find childcare,» he explained. For him, this shows that «the system isn’t working for us.»

Mixed experiences among drivers

On Reddit, California drivers shared their experiences retaking the exam. Some reported quick and hassle-free processes at different DMV offices throughout the state. «At the San Mateo DMV office they were very friendly and helped me quickly without having to wait in line,» wrote one user.

A similar case occurred in Santa Monica, according to another user’s account. «The appointment was quick, the test too,» she said. However, when asking why she had to retake the exam, the official response was unclear: she was told they didn’t know and that she should be happy she passed.

Last week, the state announced a partnership with Anthropic to integrate its Claude artificial intelligence tool. This technology will be implemented across all state agencies, including the DMV. It has not been specified whether AI was used to identify exam anomalies.

According to the Governor’s office, the DMV was already using Claude for a different specific purpose. The tool sought to «improve customer service and reduce wait times.» There is still no official confirmation of its direct relationship to the current fraud scandal.

History of controversy at the DMV

This is not the first time California’s DMV has faced criticism over data handling. Previously, public transportation officials were questioned over their plans to share driver information. Among the data in question was information on undocumented immigrants.

The controversy arose amid pressure from the federal Department of Homeland Security. Critics accused the state of breaking a promise made a decade ago. That commitment aimed to protect immigrants when issuing them driver’s licenses.
