Instagram recently launched a new artificial intelligence tool called Muse Image. This feature allows editing and generating images using user photographs without notifying them. Public accounts are automatically included in the system by default currently. The measure generated immediate controversy over consent and personal digital privacy.

The tool is presented as a “creative partner” for the 3 billion global users. According to information from The Independent, Meta defends the feature as a creative way to connect and share. However, cybersecurity experts warn about significant privacy and security risks. Deepfake images are already a major problem for cybercriminals currently.

Users must manually disable the feature if they do not wish to participate in the system. Private accounts and those under 18 years old are automatically excluded for protection. For everyone else, the process requires specific navigation within profile settings. This raises concern because many users are completely unaware this option exists.

What Risks Does the Muse Image Tool Present?

Deepfake images created with artificial intelligence are already a major problem currently. Cybercriminals use them to create highly realistic falsifications of human faces. According to information from Malwarebytes, this allows hackers to carry out sophisticated social engineering attacks. They can impersonate friends, family members, or colleagues of victims to deceive them.

These fake images can also be used to spread misinformation about specific individuals. Facial manipulation can create compromising situations that never actually occurred. This damages personal and professional reputations significantly and durably. The psychological consequences for victims can be severe and prolonged temporarily.

Meta stated it built Muse Image with strong controls and security barriers from the start. According to a company spokesperson, they will take action against content that violates Community Standards. However, experts point out that the tool lowers the barrier to creating synthetic images. This facilitates the creation of content for impersonation, scams, or other potential abuses.

How to Disable the Artificial Intelligence Feature?

To disable the Muse Image feature, Instagram users must first open their Profile. Then they access the main Menu and select the option “Share and Reuse.” There they will find the specific settings to control how their content is used with AI. The process is straightforward but requires prior knowledge of the exact location.
