Apple will raise prices between $100 and $300 on several Mac and iPad models due to memory chip shortages. The adjustment is already affecting families, students, and workers who depend on these devices for studying and work.

The company attributes the increase to rising memory and storage costs driven by demand from artificial intelligence data centers. The impact is significant, as several popular models already exceed key household budget thresholds.

Which models went up?

Apple implemented the adjustment starting June 26, 2026. The move affected best-selling devices, especially in the entry and mid-range segments. The company confirmed price increases on various Mac and iPad models, while leaving base prices unchanged for now on iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods. However, the internal message is clear: pressure on components continues to grow.

Among the most visible changes are the entry-level MacBook, the 512 GB MacBook Air and the 14-inch MacBook Pro. iPad Air and iPad Pro with WiFi connectivity also saw price increases. According to The Boston Globe, the hardest hit are college students and creatives. These are users who typically depend on fast laptops and powerful tablets for work, class, and editing.

Why did prices go up?

Apple said the problem lies in the shortage of DRAM and NAND chips. These components are essential for memory and storage in electronic devices. The company explained that costs increased dramatically due to demand from artificial intelligence data centers. This growth has strained the supply chain worldwide.

In other words, the technology that powers AI tools is also making everyday computers more expensive. What is produced today for large servers ends up affecting a student’s laptop or a family’s iPad. The Federal Reserve often warns that cost increases in inputs can be passed on to consumers. This case fits that logic, because the pressure doesn’t come just from general inflation, but from scarce components.

How does it affect your wallet?

The $100 to $300 increase may seem small in large numbers. But on tight budgets it can change an entire purchase decision. For many Latino families, that jump means waiting a few more months. Or looking for refurbished equipment, older models, or cheaper brands.
